Their second port of call after having made it to New York was supposed to have been Veracruz, Mexico, to drop off a large shipment of mayonnaise.
In the wee morning hours, however, the ship struck an iceberg and wasn't able to make it to either port of call. Word reached high Mexican political officials that morning, and in their sadness, they decided to make a national holiday to honour the downed ocean liner.
And do you know what that holiday was called?
Cinco de Mayo.
